How to remove stolen and counterfeit content from the internet - DMCA - The Digital Millennium Copyright

Unfortunately, many content creators will face the challenge of counterfeits and thief's. Understanding how to remove your content will help keep your content and earnings under your control.

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a United States copyright law that was enacted in 1998. It implements two 1996 treaties of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and aims to address the challenges posed by digital media and the internet. The DMCA has several key provisions:

1. Anti-Circumvention: It prohibits the circumvention of technological measures used by copyright owners to protect their works (e.g., DRM - Digital Rights Management).

2. Safe Harbor: It provides "safe harbor" protections for online service providers (OSPs) from liability for the infringing activities of their users, provided they comply with certain requirements, such as promptly removing infringing material upon notification.

3. Notice and Takedown: It establishes a process for copyright holders to request the removal of infringing content from websites. Copyright owners can send a notice to the OSP, and the OSP must act expeditiously to remove or disable access to the material.

4. Penalties: It imposes penalties for copyright infringement and for removing or altering copyright management information.

What you will need to file a DMCA request:

  • Link of Infringing URL

  • Source URL - Where the content was stolen from

  • Description of Infringement - (i.e. this video was stolen from my live stream, and I would like this taken down immediately)

Many of the NSFW hosts sites for creators have their own teams or have partnered with service providers to help prosecute and remove content pirates, here are the links to contact them directly:
